Experiences in Pandemic Times When Schools Opened

Since March, everybody is struggling in adapting to this new normal activities. Observing health protocols and afraid of going out because of  what I read in the news online.

Classes opened last Oct 5, 2020. There are 3 choices, one is Modular, the school will give learning materials which the parents will get from the school, second is online learning, one needs a gadget like celphones and laptops and the third, the blended learning, this is a mix of modular and online learning. Our children specially the elementary chose modular learning while the high school chose the blended learning.

I am more worried of what are scholars become. Learning on their own since face to face is not allowed, the children were not able to understand their lessons. They cannot ask help from their parents because they didn’t finish there elementary years. Thanks to EMS for the unending support and love to our scholars, they were able to sustain their daily needs through the donation from the sponsors.

Until now, we are not fully recovered. We still have many cases everyday but not in Cebu. We just have few cases here and in Cebu provinces. Many businesses closed. Some are struggling because they have low income. Our scholars cannot sell keychains in Sto Nino because there are no foreigners and also children 15 years below are not allowed to sell or be on the streets. Covid19 is here to stay.

Compared to face to face, our job is very busy monitoring the children in their homes. Having Sunday activity helps me and Clavel ease the burden for the week. I always hear complaints like no to modular learning. There is no teacher that can teach the scholars. It is so difficult for them to understand English as the medium of instruction.

Because they are always staying home for their safety, our scholars were able to do things like doing house chores, bonding with their siblings and their parents. Some develop their skills like playing the guitar, designing and playing basketball which most of our boy’s passion towards sports. But then and again because of Covid 19, their movement is limited.

Life must go on. We need to move forward and do things that will help our body to be healthy and strong.
