Aila

Three years ago, I was given the opportunity to be a teacher to elementary students in EMS - an organization that helped me in shaping my future. It was first started in an online setting where I was also transitioning as I enter my first year of college. I can still clearly recall how uncertain and full of questions I was when I first received the news.

Will I be able to perform my duties? Can I manage the kids well enough? Will this disrupt my studies or be beneficial to my financial and physical state? It was a hard decision for me but I stood to it because I remembered that 13 years ago, I was also a young and illiterate student who was once shaped by my mentors in this organization. 13 years after, I am now one of the volunteer teachers in EMS. Isn’t life full of surprises and fortuitous? Yes, it was.

I am a full-time student and a part-time teacher. I am in my third year in university and I’m currently taking a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies. On weekdays, I am a full-time student and every Sunday, I am a part-time teacher.

Back then, I was also one of these students who’s listening to the discussions taught by our mentors in EMS. I was shaped academically and personally until I graduated senior high school. With a lucky opportunity, I am now one of the teachers in EMS. Every Sunday, I have to meet my students and teach them the lesson that I personally prepare for them.

For the first days, I am having a hard time because it was hard finding a lesson, preparing the lesson, and also teaching it to them so that everybody could understand. I prepare lessons for them in relation to Mathematics, English, Science, and other subjects. I am also teaching them values and good attitudes. I also teach them sports. I am an all-around teacher.

Despite all the difficulties, I am thankful for it because it became my training ground since I am also an aspiring teacher. I was able to transfer my knowledge to my students. Along the way, I started to love my job and started to love my students. One of my favorite memories as an EMS volunteer teacher is seeing my students participate in my lessons. I find it exciting to see the smiles of happiness as my students debate the correct answers, correct spellings, and correct calculations.

I love to hear about their achievements and difficulties in school. I love to see them trying their best to learn. The fact that I could possibly impact a young person’s life is exciting to me. The ability to learn is one of the most important developments of humanity.

During my teaching experience, my students taught me that each one learns differently and has a different capacity to process and apply information. Every student of mine is a special individual and they learn and develop at different rates and paces. It took me a while to understand the uniqueness of these little children.

My students are unique individuals that have come to me with different knowledge and skill levels. Therefore, I learned that as a teacher, I should learn what my students like, who’s students are capable of, and how they are developing and learning.

Was I able to perform my duty as an EMS teacher? Yes. In my almost three years of teaching experience, I have developed a set of personal educational philosophies, beliefs, and values that will carry me in my future career as a professional teacher.

Education breeds confidence. My student gain confidence because I make sure that I supported them. As a result, confidence breeds hope. I am hoping for a good future for my students in EMS. As long as I am
with them, I will make sure to guide them as they slowly reach their dreams.

Did I manage my students enough? Yes, because I believe that my students are strong, active, curious, and competent learners who are trying their best to learn, and because of their determination, it becomes my motivation.

Did it disrupt my study? No. It was an advantage on my end since I am also learning. 13 years after, I am now one of the EMS teachers who is now bringing hope and knowledge to my students’ ignorant minds. Slowly, I am shaping my students in thinking that they are braver than they believe, stronger than they seem, and smarter than they think because back then, I am also one of them.
