First of all, airfare to Cebu, Philippines is about twice as expensive as it was before Corona. 200,000 yen for a direct flight from Narita during spring vacation in 2023. For those who remember that before Corona, a direct flight from Narita to Cebu was priced at 80,000-100,000 yen, this is a surprisingly high price. The world situation may have something to do with it, but it is tough.

Entering the country is easier than before. No prior PCR or antigen testing is required. Even those who have not been vaccinated can now enter the Philippines under certain conditions. Perhaps because of this, many young people are now visiting this Cebu. Many of them are studying English. It makes me feel that among Asian countries, the recovery from the Corona was the fastest. Language schools that were closed are starting to reopen.

Prices have become higher. The depreciation of the Japanese yen has also had an effect, but I feel that prices are high. I hear that the price of onions, in particular, has skyrocketed. By the way, when I exchanged money today (February 20, 2023), 10,000 yen is about 3,700 pesos. This amount varies depending on the money exchanger, but considering that I used to get about 5,000 pesos (a long time ago), I realize that the Japanese yen has weakened.

All of the EMS scholarship students have grown so much, the boys have grown so tall that at first it was hard to tell who was who. Even in Corona, the children are growing. Most of the Scholars continue to be EMS Scholars, which means they have not quit school and are continuing their studies. Seeing them has renewed my desire as a supporter to help these children in any way I can for their future.

However, there are some things that will never change. That is the social disparity in this country. Because of Corona, the poor have been out of work for a long time, and even if they do have work now, it is the same as before, day labor for a day at a time. And they are forced to work for less than the daily minimum wage set by the government. Even though prices have risen, wages have not, further exacerbating the level of poverty.

Poverty is not something that can be managed only by their own will. It is difficult to keep a goal in mind when the foundation of life is weak, even if we have the will to do so. Our role is to support children so that they do not lose sight of their goals. Your support will help us do that. Thank you for your continued support.
